2017 Climb Every Mountain Fitness Challenge

2017 Climb Every Mountain Fitness Challenge at Woodleaf UMC
Our Woodleaf United Methodist Church health ministry invites everyone to join our Spring 2017 Climb Every Mountain Challenge! This fitness challenge encourages everyone to be physically active an average of 20 minutes/day throughout the eleven weeks, Sunday, March 5 through Saturday, May 20, 2017.

Who can join the challenge?
Anyone may join the challenge; children should get permission from parents/guardians and anyone with health concerns should consult with one's healthcare provider to determine which exercises are safe. There is no cost to participate in the challenge. Our health ministry simply wants to encourage healthy lifestyle habits!

How does the challenge work?
Exercise regularly, at least 20 minutes daily if possible. Choose whatever physical exercise meets your needs. Walking, swimming, yard work, exercise classes, dancing, mountain-climbing, cleaning the house, etc. all count as exercise for this challenge. Those who are bed bound may do range of motion exercises in the bed. Split exercise times into smaller segments throughout the day if necessary to achieve at least 20 minutes per day.

Participants earn one point for each 20 minutes of exercise. For example, if you exercise 45 minutes on Tuesday, you will earn 2 points for that day. If you exercise one hour on Saturday, you will earn 3 points for that day. If you exercise 20 minutes each day, you will earn 7 points for that week. Those who average at least 20 minutes of exercise per day may experience a wealth of healthy lifestyle benefits!

See the chart below:

20-39 minutes exercise
1 point
40-59 minutes exercise

60-79 minutes exercise

80-99 minutes exercise

Challenge weeks start on Sunday and end on Saturday. I have included a worksheet below that can be picked up at the church or downloaded and printed that you may find helpful for keeping track of points. Record exercise points you earn each day, add your points, and send your name and weekly totals by Tuesday of the following week to Katrena via one of the following ways:

  • Record on paper and submit at Woodleaf UMC
  • Email Katrena at NurseforWoodleafUMC@gmail.com
  • Call and leave a message at the church at 704-278-1888

No, mountain-climbing is not required! We invite you to learn about various North Carolina mountains and find spiritual inspiration through "monumental" Bible verses by reading weekly blog posts online or at the church during this fitness challenge.

How will results be shared?
Results will be posted on this blog and at the church each week. No names will be posted online; results will show ranges of completion each week.

What happens at the end?
We will have a celebration party at the end of the fitness challenge. Participants will receive certificates. The date and time of the party will be announced later.

Week 11 Walk to Bethlehem, PA Fitness Challenge

Week 11 Walk to Bethlehem, PA Fitness Challenge Joy to the World
Welcome to Week 11 of the Walk to Bethlehem, PA fitness challenge sponsored by the Woodleaf UMC health ministry program! This week's Christmas hymn is Joy to the World. Isaac Watts wrote the lyrics in 1719. If his name sounds familiar, perhaps this is because he wrote about 650 hymns and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody." Lowell Mason wrote the rousing melody, perhaps basing part of the melody on Handel's Messiah.

"For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel." Luke 2: 30-32
